My design brief specified that I had to create a demo of a game in which an airplane flies through hoops. It also said that this demo had to nurture hand-eye coordination and peripheral vision. The brief also stated that it had to be a practical, efficient and well designed game for pc that is intuitive and easy to pick up. It also says that the game has to be aimed at children and enjoyable for adults. The designs must be simple and creative and not require a high powered machine to run. This demo game was to be presented in the form of a .exe.
It was important to make sure that the designs were as high quality as possible as they had to cater to a large group of people. It is not a simple task to make a game simple and intuitive enough to cater to children while still keeping enough depth to cater to adults as well. This meant that proportion and aesthetics played a large role in the design. Despite this difficulty, I feel that I achieved this because my design is simple while still being enjoyable to play. I think that adding the particle systems really helped add enjoyment to the game by providing feedback to the person playing the game.
I feel that completing this project has helped me to improve my skills in many different areas. Using blender has improved my skills with 3D modelling, texturing, lighting, background images and advanced modifiers like the mirror modifier. Using Unity3D has improved my skills with scripting in C# as well as my game design skills.
I am quite happy with the final product and while I feel like the brief was addressed well, I also think that there are some areas where I could improve Wings of Fury if I had more time to work on it. The sound effects are not complete, there is no sound for passing through a hoop or crashing the plane and if I had more time I would have fixed this.
As far as project management goes, I feel that I was committed to completing this project to a high standard and I dedicated a lot of time at home and at school to achieiving this goal. While I worked hard, I still ran out of time due to the huge amount of work that this project entailed. If I had more time I would have polished the game a lot more and maybe added in new features like different times of day you could play at.
Overall I am very happy with what I produced. I’m especially proud of the fact that I didn’t use any tutorials for unity other that for the UI. I’m confident that the final product meets the requirements of the brief as it is simple yet it still has a bit of depth to the gameplay.
